The South Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) has become the first in South Africa to introduce a completely online platform for teachers to obtain the Advanced Certificate in Teaching (ACT) in either Foundation, Intermediate, or Senior Phase in 18-20 months, compared to the usual 24 months. These accelerated, online programmes, which also provide academic and technological support, represent further opportunities for connecting teachers to essential professional growth and credentials.

The Advanced Certificate in Teaching addresses the requirement for a teaching and learning pathway for teachers wanting to advance in their careers. This qualification has a specific aim to improve teachers’ knowledge and competencies towards a new subject, or strengthen their subject specialisation.

This fully online programme enables teachers to advance in their level of learning achievement through increased knowledge, problem solving exercises, and practical applications. The skills obtained can be used immediately in the classroom and ACT completion qualifies teachers on a higher level.

Students complete the certificate programme via a 100% online format, so no travel or contact sessions are required. There are no formal exams; student progress is measured through online assessments based on demonstrating practical application in the classroom.

Applied competencies to meet National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 6 are organised into nine to ten consecutive 8-week sessions. These are designed to meet the professional needs of in-service teachers.  Students can enrol in, and pay for, one session at a time.
