On Wednesday 4 October 2017, the South African Breweries Central Region (SAB) and the South African Football Association (SAFA) had their official handover ceremony of several football technical kits. This initiative is part of a national roadshow to magnify the fundamentals and importance of training at grassroots level in local football.

This is one of several technical kit handovers that will see the South African Breweries (SAB) and the South African Football Association (SAFA) embark on a national roadshow to magnify the fundamentals and importance of training at grassroots level in local football.

The technical kits, which consists of soccer balls, training cones, whistles and stopwatches, are an aid of assisting the huge number of SAB League teams across the country in their preparations ahead of the next season.

Development has long been a key element of SAB’s football sponsorship. At the heart of this commitment is the company’s 17 year-long investment in the country’s largest grassroots league, the SAB League, which aims to develop SA’s future football stars and the sport, at grassroots level. SAB became the title of the league in 2000 (then known as the SAB U21 Regional League).

The company’s investment in football at grassroots level is entrenched in its conviction that socio-e conomic change can be brought to South-Africa’s communities in this way. Football has a proven track-record of playing a role in bringing positive change to people’s lives and to communities. SAB takes pride in playing a leadership role in this societal change. Further to this, South African football and its standing both at a local and international level, can be improved through this approach.

Says Kgosi Mogotsi, South African Breweries, Corporate Affairs Manager: “It’s very important for us as a company to support the communities we operate in. Sport is one of the key activities that assist in community development. The aim of the SAB League is to identify and nurture young sporting talent at grassroots level, promoting the opportunity for them to move through the ranks of South African football. The SAB League is South Africa’s largest senior football development league with a nationwide reach covering SAFA’s 52 regions. A total of 1 050 clubs participate in the SAB League, equating to 26 250 players”.

Letima Mogorosi, SAFA Provincial Chairperson, says: “We are very grateful to South African Breweries with their support of South African Football. This sponsorship shows SAB’s commitment to football development in our country.  I believe that the league will produce talented and educated footballers going forward”.

Says Kgomotso Kutlwano Tlhakudi, Chief Director Sport and Recreation from the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation from the Free State Provincial Government: “We feel honoured to be part of this initiative. We as the government need partners to help us deliver – especially to the communities. With this soccer initiative, we are building the futures of young men and women. Sport unites people”.
