|Johannesburg, March 5 – “Chasing the Sun” led the way for the sport documentary genre and now SuperSport has created Documentary Friday to satisfy fans’ appetite for behind-the-scenes films and insights.
Inspired by the popularity of documentaries broadcast on SuperSport during the lockdown, the World of Champions has dug into its library – and borrowed from others – to arrange a weekly line-up of world-class programming.
Starting this week, HBO-produced “The Weight of Gold” delves into the success of Olympians and the frequent comedown that defines so many. Narrated by Michael Phelps, the greatest of all Olympians and a man who has bravely spoken of his own depression, the provocative film is a stark reminder of just how human even superstar athletes are.
With a weekly 8pm slot on SS Variety 3 (from Compact to Premium), the channel will feature an array of subjects in coming weeks. Next week (March 12) “Klopp – The Inside Story” will chart Jurgen Klopp’s incredible journey.
On March 19, the riveting two-part “Tiger” documentary will play out. It offers deep insight into the making of Tiger Woods, focusing on both the the positive and negative influences that shaped him and his legend.
The following Friday (March 26) will offer a broad audience the chance to see the entire series of “Chasing the Sun”, which will have an earlier start time to accommodate the Springbok documentary at a reasonable hour.
Explaining the rationale to give a stronger focus to storytelling, Docky Dockrat, SuperSport’s head of programming, said that recent ratings had confirmed that viewers enjoyed the addition of documentaries.
“Chasing the Sun helped us understand that storytelling is a huge part of what people enjoy,” said Dockrat. “These also help stimulate interest in the sports, so it’s a very successful formula and one we look forward to pursuing.”
Apart from delving into its own library, SuperSport will acquire content from broadcast partners like HBO and ESPN, who boast a rich catalogue of award-winning “30 for 30” documentaries.
