The prestigious SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year Awards for the Bethlehem newspaper, Vrystaat News, was held on Friday 8 November at Lavender Hills Country Estate. First, second, third places were awarded for our newspaper partner – Vrystaat Nuus/News.
Our guest speaker for the day was Ebarnie Cilliers, an energetic athletic coach with 10+ years of experience motivating clients, mentoring students, and helping athletes meet their goals in all kinds of sport like running, cycling, swimming and the multisport lifestyle.

The awards ceremony was a resounding success with 40 attendees. The coveted awards went to:
1st place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vrystaat News | Age: 12 | Sports: Tennis, Cricket
Stéphan du Plooy (12)
Stephan excels on all 3 criteria we looked for to determine the Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year. He performs well for his age, is versatile and has performed internationally. He won the under-14 boys division of the Stan Roth Memorial City Park Championships in New Orleans, USA, whilst only 12 years old. He was selected as a member of the u / 13 South African school tennis team and also performed at regional level by being included in several Eastern Free State and Free State teams. He also excels in cricket.
2nd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vrystaat News | Age: 11 | Sports: athletics, hockey, tennis, cross country, netball
Carise van Rooyen (11)
Carise excels in every sport she participates in. She is very versatile and participates in athletics, hockey, tennis, cross country, netball and dance. She performed at regional level and also represented her school at SAs. She is in the Eastern Free State teams for athletics, hockey, tennis and cross country. For cross country she is also in the Free State team that participated in the South African championships.
3rd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vrystaat News | Age: 14 |Sports: athletics, rugby, tennis and cricket
Frederik Fourie (14)
Frederik performed well in four sports at regional level, namely athletics, rugby, tennis and cricket. In Athletics he participated in various events. With rugby, he was part of his school’s first team, the Griffons under-13 team, and won a trophy for the most promising back player during the Nyati school rugby tour. He was part of his school’s first cricket team, as well as the Eastern Free State U / 13 cricket team.
