Let’s Play Sports Star of the Year – Kroonnews & Vista

The prestigious SuperSport Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year Awards for the Welkom newspapers, Vista and Kroonnews, was held on Friday 22 November at Digger’s Inn in Welkom. First, second, third places were awarded for our newspaper partners. Our guest speakers for the day were Wynand Pienaar from the Griffons as well as Runaldi de Beer from Spec-Savers. Spec-Savers came on board by sponsoring a R1295 Polar Sunglasses voucher for the winner as a lucky draw voucher for the parents worth R500. VISTA: 1st place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vista | Age: 16 | Sports: Athletics, Netball, Tennis

Miné de Klerk (16)

Miné de Klerk, a pupil of Goudveld-Hoërskool. This 16-year-old is an outstanding sportswoman and was chosen because of achievements in athletics, netball and tennis. Her top achievement which clinched her first place was the silver medal she got for South Africa at the African Youth and Junior Champs in Abijan Ivory Coast. Miné was a member of the SA Youth athletics team which took part at these games. She obtained her silver in u.18 shot put and she also got a fourth place in discus u.18. She is a member of the Free State u.16A netball team which took part at the SA’s in Boksburg this year, and she is a member of the Lejweleputswa tennis team.

2nd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vista | Age: 15 | Sports: tennis, squash, hockey, cricket

Elzandri Nortje (15)

Elzandri Nortje (15), a pupil of Goudveld-Hoërskool. Vista chose Elzandri for second position because of her tenacity. In 2019 took part in tennis, squash, hockey and cricket (boys and girls). Elzandri is in the SA schools u.19B girls cricket team and she is the captain of her school’s first cricket team (boys and girls). She represented the free State Women’s cricket against KZN in October 2019 during the SA Women’s Crickets league. In May 2019, Elzandri was awarded the best u. 19 girls’ cricket player at the Free State Cricket Union’s annual awards in Bloemfontein. Elzandri played Lejweleputswe Tennis u.15, and she is captain of this team. She is No.1 in her age group on school and district level. She plays u.16 Free State squash and she is No. 1 player in her age group. She was the district’s top player. Elzandri was captain of the FS squash team. She also plays Northern Free State hockey and she is the captain of the u.15 team.

3rd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Vista | Age: 12 |Sports: tennis, netball, hockey, athletics

Mienke Nieuwenhuis (12)

Mienke Nieuwenhuis (12), a pupil of Welkom-Volkskool. Vista chose Mienke to take third place because of her versatility. In 2019 she took in, and excelled in, tennis, netball, hockey and athletics. She has Free State colours for tennis, netball and athletics, and Northern Free State colours for hockey. She was selected for the netball team which is going to Dubai in 2020, and she was selected for the hockey team which is going to the Netherlands in 2020.

KROONNEWS:

1st place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Kroonnews | Age: 13 | Sports: Mounted Archery

El-Rico Klemp (13)

El-rico Klemp, a Gr. 8 learner of the Kroonstad High School (Blouskool), has been chosen as the overall winner of the Kroonnuus Let’s Play Supersport Star for his sporting achievements in mounted archery. He was the overall junior winner for the May to June international walk postal match held by the International Horseback Archery Alliance (IHAA) as well as the overall junior winner for the May to June canter postal match and was ranked fifth in the combined junior and senior canter postal match. Currently he holds the title for first place in the junior category and overall fifth in the world in both the junior and senior matches. 2nd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Kroonnews | Age: 16 | Sports: athletics, netball, ringball, cricket Mari Pieterse (15) Received the overall third place for her versatility in four different sports and her respective outstanding achievements in the various sports that include, athletics, netball, ringball and cricket. 3rd place – Let’s Play Sport Star of the Year for Kroonnews | Age: 15 |Sports: Jukskei Moswatsi Galeboi (15) Moswatsi Galeboi – received the second place for his outstanding performance throughout the year in Jukskei and for partaking in the International Jukskei competition that was held in Namibia.

Received the overall third place for her versatility in four different sports and her respective outstanding achievements in the various sports that include, athletics, netball, ringball and cricket.

Moswatsi Galeboi (15)

Moswatsi Galeboi – received the second place for his outstanding performance throughout the year in Jukskei and for partaking in the International Jukskei competition that was held in Namibia.
